From July 2023 until March 2024, I had the opportunity to showcase my 'Protest in Red' series in a window exhibition in cooperation with Getir Art. This was a significant milestone for me, as it was my first time presenting my work so publicly. The exhibition was held at Weesperstraat 61, right in the heart of Amsterdam—a location bustling with activity and constant foot traffic. I was both excited and nervous, but also deeply inspired by the chance to share my art with such a wide audience.
Discovering Getir Art
Getir Art is an initiative that focuses on bringing artists into public spaces and engaging with local communities. Their mission emphasizes that art should be accessible to everyone, not just confined to galleries or museums. By collaborating with them, I could introduce my work to an audience that may not typically engage with contemporary art.
This initiative aligns perfectly with my vision as an artist. The arts should ignite a conversation, and public exhibitions can do just that. They offer a platform where those passing by can contemplate the artwork without the intimidation that sometimes accompanies traditional galleries.
The Venue: A Perfect Setting
The space consisted of six large windows, making it a striking platform for my collages. Each window was thoughtfully arranged to highlight different aspects of the 'Protest in Red' series, allowing viewers to reflect on the themes of protest, social justice, and the current state of the world.
The 'Protest in Red' Series Explained
The 'Protest in Red' series is born out of my concerns about the current state of the world and the direction our society is heading. The color red, traditionally associated with passion and urgency, serves as both a visual element and a conceptual anchor in the series.
For example, one collage features strong visual contrasts and provocative imagery that highlight the struggle against social injustices. The layering of different textures creates depth, inviting viewers to look closer and interpret the artwork through their unique experiences.
Building Awareness Through Art
Art has the power to build awareness and provoke thought, and this exhibition was an avenue for doing just that. In a world increasingly characterized by polarization and division, I believe it is crucial to provide spaces where art can inspire unity and understanding.
Through my 'Protest in Red' series, I wish to extend beyond mere aesthetics. My aim is to ignite conversations about urgent global issues. Art can be a catalyst for change, and every discussion initiated through this exhibition counts towards broader awareness and understanding of these topics.
